81152 PASSIFLORA INCARNATA PAS HT CGH PRICE: $ 8.50 "Hardy Passion Flower" Native with yellow edible fruit following the astoundingly beautiful pale lavender flowers with elaborately fringed pink-purple coronas. Please remember that this emerges from the ground very late in the spring unless situated in a warm courtyard: the local name of "Maypop" accurately refers to its tendency to pop up out of the ground in late May. Nonetheless, on chilly springs (like that of '05) the first shoots did not emerge until June (and the first blossoms opened on July 3)--so if you become nervous about waiting for late dormancy breaking plants, best avoid this one! Our clump vigorously vines on up to cover a second story window with ease.

40734 PASSIFLORA INCENSE [HYB] PAS HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Hybrid of P. incarnata x P. cincinnata. Many deep purple blossoms some 6" across with considerable fragrance; vigorous grower with a good reputation for outdoor hardiness in northern zones--we offer no guarentee on winter hardiness because we cannot control the site at which you decide to plant this.

81172 PENNISETUM ALOPECUROIDES MOUDRY GRA HT PRICE: $ 3.75 Wide deeply arching blades form a highly decorative specimen from which emerge "Jet Black Foxtails" (purple mahogany seed plumes creating constant show on into the first frosts)--still the most popular grass at the nursery as it achieves its most splendid show during that late late summer period when so many other garden vamps have lost their vivid punch. Waist high if planted in rich moist soil; but typically much shorter, depending on soil & moisture levels. This is the incredible show-off on the pathways to the sales area here at the nursery that lights up the area from summer on through the first freezes. {Please note: the dramatic purple African fountain grass species are offered in the TROPICAL plant section}

80343 PENSTEMON PINIFOLIUS SCR HT PRICE: $ 4.25 Low shrubby mounds of filiform needle lvs; bright rose-red tubular fls very showy. Perfect trough plant.

89207 PERSICARIA AMPLEXICAULIS GOLDEN ARROW POLYGON HP PRICE: $ 15.00 "Golden Afghan Firetail" Clumping moisture loving perennial with golden lime lance leaves clapsing elegant 18" to 22" stems tipped with short stalked spines (cattails) of cardinal red flowers fading to rose, sometimes still blooming at frost.

88772 PERSICARIA MICROCEPHALA RED DRAGON POLYGON HT HH PRICE: $ 4.50 Beyond marvelous rockery or container perennial: two foot stems emerge from a woody crown displaying saber shaped leaves of rich burgundy, chevroned a vibrant pewter fading to deep emerald edges; fleecy blossoms demurely appear late summer. [Polygonum sphaerostachyum]

88986 PETASITES JAPONICUS GIGANTEUS [HORT] COMP HT PRICE: $ 22.00 The "Monster Butter-burr"-- with truly giant rounded leaves reaching impressive dimensions; showy white inflorescence very early spring emerging from the Feburary (sometimes frozen) ground like science fiction artichokes. If it gets too vigorous, remember that the Japanese use the petioles in stir fry. Prefers cool temps and moist feet. A massive presence.

88800 PETASITES JAPONICUS PURPUREUS COMP HP PRICE: $ 35.00 Odd "Purple Bog Daisy" with new foliage a weird purple maturing into giant lilac tinged leaves. Needs bog to romp in. Difficult to ship once in leaf; so later orders will be sent with current foliage removed.

80863 PHRAGMITES AUSTRALIS AUREA GRA HT PRICE: $ 15.00 "Golden Carrizo" Variegated clone of "Common Reed" with the glaucous blades striped golden & lime; weeping one-sided panicles of showy purple seeds fading to russet in Fall; thrives in moist clay and full sun; tends to wander. But if if wanders too far you can harvest it because this graceful reed has long been used to control coughing and vomiting, to lower fevers and even used to treat seafood poising! We are not making this up.

88810 PHRAGMITES AUSTRALIS CANDY STRIPE GRA HT PRICE: $ 15.00 Striking "Pink Banded Pampas Reed" with mint green strap leaves and strong stalks banded and striped with clear white and soft pink. Much treasured by those dedicated to the perpetuation of variegation in all landscapes. As is not a vigorous brute (as is the species form), this treasure is very effective when used as a vertical accent anchored in a barely submerged pot in an aquatic tub on your deck or patio.

10960 PHYLLITIS [ASPLENIUM] SCOLOPENDRIUM POLYP GH PRICE: $ 8.00 Rosette of knife-shaped leathery undivided fronds. Can often be grown outside in a protected spot or in milder climates than ours. This is the famous "Hart's Tongue" fern. There are several crested forms of this. We are offering the standard form. The last picture is of a crested form; perhaps we will have these in the future.

10961 PHYLLITIS SCOLOPENDRIUM CRISTATA POLYP GH PRICE: $ 12.00 Crested on the tips of each frond, this plant is one of the most pleasing ferns.

80363 PHYLLOSTACHYS BISSETII GRA HT PRICE: $ 28.00 "David Bisset Bamboo" Giant hardy dramatic species with 1" diameter canes reaching 22'; dark leaves attractively curl at tips. A running species which remains brilliant green here most winters; easier to contain than most its kin.

88993 PHYLLOSTACHYS HETEROCLADA PURPURATA GRA HT PRICE: $ 22.50 The impressive "Water Bamboo" with the purple colored sheath of the zigaging new culms giving this 20' bamboo the 'purpurata' in its title; survives wet areas because of the unusual air channels in its hard rhizomes.

80364 PHYLLOSTACHY NIGRA BLACK BAMBOO GRA GH PRICE: $ 25.00 One of the most sought after of the Bamboo cultivars, this is not totally hardy in the North, but after a cool spell always darkens into a great looking plant. We grow this outside here, but it can be containerized easily and make a great indoor subject. These may be available in different sizes; please inquire.

70895 PHYLLOSTACHYS RUBRAMARGINATA GRA HT PRICE: $ 22.50 Prolific producer of 1" culms reaching 32 feet; wood used extensively for building and for furniture in China; edible shoots--although we have not tried them; yet surely if too many culms emerge some spring, you need only to add this to your lunch menu or support your local panda and thus keep your grove within appropriate boundaries. This is the impressive grove by the garage on our nursery grounds--We have had only two or three winters in the last twenty years in which this grove lost its green foliage (much to the chagrin of our resident songbirds who love to hang out all winter in the lush foliage held on stalks which defeat any cat's climbing instincts). We try to always maintain a stock of gallon sized plants, so that they can be easily shipped. Ask for larger size prices for pickup at the nursery. Digging this is always a challenge.

54350 PHYTOLACCA AMERICANA STEVE SILBERSTEIN PHYT HT PRICE: $18.00 Now available. 31717 PINELLIA TRIPARTITA ARAC HH HT PRICE: $ 5.50 Vigorously clumping species with green spathes striped purple. The fingered foliage is divided into how many lobes? Check the name--but do not be surprised if a mature bulb eventually ignores this--we have found that very very few plants have developed reading skills to the point of adequately understanding the names and descriptions which have been imposed upon them by botanists. Certainly the Pinella crew is quite uninterested in the botanic literature printed about them. These can selfsow with abandon if the site suits them: beware!

72841 PINUS STROBUS FASTIGATA PIN HT PRICE: $ 38.00 "Fastigate White Pine" All braches point directly upwards to parallel the main trunk; a good choice for a small inclosed courtyard garden.

70765 PINUS STROBUS HILLSIDE WINTER GOLD PIN HT PRICE: $ 28.00 "Golden Eastern White Pine" Soft green in summer; very bright yellow gold during winter. Outstanding cultivar: certainly lights up our winter garden here in Ohio, especially stunning when planted in front of dark Hemlocks or dusky deep green spruces. As with all "White Pines" avoid planting in a constantly wet or boggy location.

72842 PINUS SYLVESTRIS AUREUS PIN HT PRICE: $ 38.00 Bright gray green summer foliage turns bright yellow during the winter. This is a rather slow growing "Scots Pine" cultivar and thus appropriate for the small garden to lend beautiful winter interest.

72735 PINUS SYLVESTRIS GOLD COIN PIN HT PRICE: $ 48.00 Knockout selection: this "Golden Scotch Pine" becomes more and more variegated throughout the fall until achieving a pure brilliant yellow color during the entire winter. A very very bright winter statement of saturated color. Remember that the new candles emerging with new needles in the spring will show little coloration. Slower growing and of lower outline than 'Aurea' but with the brightest gold saturation of any conifer in our display gardens.

81131 PLANTAGO ASIATICA VARIEGATA PLA HT PRICE: $ 4.50 Wide small paddle shaped leaves liberally striped and blotched with bright ivory white. True from seed, this small non-invasive Eruasian can form a richly variegated mat in time; also a favorite for tiny containers--but its variegation is so showy it would probably turn a mixed trough into a carnival. The seeds have traditionally been used in China to treat boils and conjunctivitis as well as bouts of vertigo. Thus an absolutely perfect plant for dizzy gardeners. If only the bulk of your "Herb Garden" inhabitants were half as beautiful! Not the vigorous Plantago major.
88897 PLANTAGO MAJOR FRILLS PRICE: $ 4.75 Absolutely charming "Parsley Leaved Plantain" forming tight rosettes of elaborately frilled and cripsed leaves--small enough for a large trough; excellent between garden walk pavers. Very cute; very amusing; very over the top. And if a few too many volunteers come up? Just gently remind the seedlings that their seeds are traditional Chinese treatments for hay fever, shingles, and hemorrhoids!

80849 PLATYCODON GRANDIFLORUS APOIENSIS ALBUM CAM HT PRICE: $ 5.75 White-flowered low-growing "Balloon Flower" Greek "platys" = broad, plus "codon" = bell. Depicted on ancient Japanese silk pictures. This single flowered dwarf selection of one of the most reliable of long term garden perennials, even being short enough to earn a spot in your rockery.

38186 PLATYCODON GRANDIFLORUS MISS TILLY CAMP HT PRICE: $ 5.25 Charming "Dwarf Balloon Flower" as this fast clumping selection of the indestructible species presents its much inflated buds opening into clear blue bells on quite short 6" to 8" stems cloaked in tidy dark green foliage. Great: a tidy low growing bug free perennial with true blue blossoms.

80851 PLATYCODON GRANDIFLORUS SEMIDUPLEX CAM HT PRICE: $ 6.50 New stock available now again! "Semi-double Chinese Bellflower" selection with cup-in-cup double blue blossoms revealed as the swollen "Balloon" buds open. Easy to grow; easy to bloom; great to depend on for many years as this perennial forms a central woody base lasting for years from which a gradually increasing clump of stems arise each spring. The roots of this species are traditionally used in some Korean soups and used by the Chinese in their "platypodi cough tablets" to treat throat infections.

80001 PLEIOBLASTUS AURICOMA [SASA / ARUNDINARIA VIRIDISTRIATA in horticulture] GRA HT PRICE: $ 6.00 Correct as Pleioblastus auricoma now--but popular long enough in horticulture to have garnered at least three genus names in the basic plant books. Nearly waist-high arched stem present wide downy blades (much larger blades than its kin offered below) suffused with yellow stripes. Easy "Gold Striped Bamboo" perfectly hardy and nearly always evergreen (ever gold?) in Ohio. Beware: this astounding beauty can ramp when planted in rich soil.

70897 PLEIOBLASTUS PYGMAEUS SHIBUYANUS TSUBOI GRA HT PRICE: $ 22.00 Slowly slowly expanding vigorous dwarf with slim bundled rayed petite leaf blades, boldly variegated, on short very erect stems; bands of white multiple pinstripes give feathery striped effect--often the new foliage appears to be completely white as it emerges. Very popular with our customers for cool greenhouse bonsai as well, although completely hardy outdoors in our Zone 6 climate, typically keeping its brightly variegated foliage intact during milder winters, unlike many of the short statured Pleioblastus.

70898 PLEIOBLASTUS SIMONII HETEROPHYLLUS GRA HT PRICE: $ 40.00 Slim extremely erect short thickets of erect purplish culms punctuated with quite distinctive clumping node growths of thin bronzy leaves with slim white stripes. Unique habit among the hardy Bamboo we have trialed as more and more striped foliage emerges from the same tuft each year. Very successful in containers (but do not leave the pots outside where the rootball can freeze solid during the winter); very popular a an uniquely foliaged finely featured "Bamboo" for the smaller garden. Does not reliably keep the small highly colored leaf blades in our winters outdoors. Ever so sophisticated.

80075 PLEIOBLASTUS OKINASASA GRA HT PRICE: $ 18.00 "Fanleaf Bamboo" Glorious waist high, tightly spaced shoots of rich green tipped with a terminal congested tufted fan of spear leaves always creating a very ornate focus in the garden--especially as these decorative tips turn bright straw colored in winter. A good pot subject also, often pictured growing in a Cymbidium pot in Japanese plant books.

65679 POLYGONATUM MULTIFLORUM VARIEGATUM [HORT] LIL HT PRICE: $ 12.00 Native from Europe to Siberia, this "Solomon's Seal" is smaller statured than P. odoratum cultivars--slow to establish; best in high shade.

81005 POLYGONUM CUSPIDATUM SPECTABILE POL HT PRICE: $ 9.75 Curious sophisticatedcultivar of "Japanese Knotweed" or "False Bamboo" producing wide brilliant cream marbled and strikingly frosted leaves. Brookside Gardens released this to us originally as Polygonum `Variegate.' This Reynoutria species produces showy panicles of greenish-white flowers in late summer--but we have never observed any viable seed. The variegation is so intense that the clumps of this Japanese beauty never reaches the proportions of the species form. Keeps the best summer color in high shade although maintains the frosted appearance in full sun if the roots are consistently moist.

81868 POLYGONUM [FALLOPIA] JAPONICUM TRICOLOR POLYG HT HH PRICE: $ 6.75 Yinger introduced this to our gardens (and we will never be able to forget): a quite remarkable clumping (sometimes wandering) member of the Buckwheats with new growth emerging coral in the spring to reach a five foot stature with leaves boldly splashed white, brilliant pink, bronze-green and emerald much valued for Ikebana. The emerging fat bronzy pink stalks in the spring are among the most astounding sight in the world of decorative horticulture--every year visitors to the gardens here take endless photos of this phenomenon of seemingly giant steroidal hot pink Asparagus stalks spearing up out of the soil. Remember that this is a big boned gal--do not plant this near any delicate modest lass in your beds as 'Tricolor' will win the battle for space. Do we love it? Of course, we love it.

11646 POLYSTICHUM POLYPHLEBARUM HT HH PRICE: $ 8.50 Hardy plant in the Alaskan "Tassel Fern" Group. Sometimes considered borderline hardy above Z5. Very handsome broad nearly symmetrical crown with outarched rich deep green glossy fronds. Needs rich moist soil and high shade to achieve its considerable beauty.

The Hardy Orange at different times of the year!

41770 PONCIRUS TRIFOLIATA FLYING DRAGON RUT HH HT PRICE: $ 15.00 Swooping, looping branchlets of this contorted sport of "Trifoliate Orange" make this a conversation container subject--looking like a potted living barbed wire coil (barbs included); now also used as a dwarfing understock for citrus. Also, this is called "Chinese Bitter Orange." This "Karatachi" is hardy outdoors in our zone 6 climate if situated away from winter wind. Ours has grown well over the last few years.

71269 POPULUS CANIDICANS AURORA [HYB] SAL HT PRICE: $ 8.50 Spring leaves emerge a brilliant yellow gradually fading to a summer green; hybrid of deltoides x nigra resulting in a female form of "Ontario Popular." Seldom variegates in heat of the South; indeed, can fail to variegate even this far north in Ohio if the initial springtime temperatures are too high--especially is night temps are warm. Location. Location. Location. There: truth in advertising. Customers assure us that cutting the trunk(s) down to near ground level mid winter encourages a proliferation of new stems in the spring which are far more likely to show impressive variegation than that produced on older wood. Opinion in advertising.

11470 PTERIDIUM AQUILINUM POLYPOD HT PRICE: $ 11.50 "Bracken" or "Pasture Brake" Coarse green fronds to four feet densely hairy beneath. Cosmopolitan distribution. This is regulated as a pernicious weed in some Western states--check with your county agent before ordering this brute of a fern. In our climate this dramatic fern must be situated in full sun and poor soil to survive and flourish, soon failing in shade or fertilized beds. Seldom offered in containers in the nursery trade as tends to dwarf unattractively in pots. Emphatically not a container subject; predictably a brute in any sunny garden. Q: Why do we offer this? A: Ken loves weeds. Or: digging this character from the front beds builds character.

70380 PYRACANTHA ANGUSTIFOLIA HARLEQUIN ROS HH HT PRICE: $ 12.00 "Variegated Firethorn" Upright shrub with brownish-yellow stems with orange red berries and white splashed leaves. Not winter hardy here in zone 6 during prolonged winters. Often in limited availability.

71121 PYRACANTHA WALKER'S DWARF [HYB] ROS HT PRICE: $8.50 Striking clusters of bright Chinese Red clusters of berries brilliant against the deep forest green foliage; wide shrub compactly, tightly foliaged, but still reaches 8 feet or more in our climate (we are told that it never reaches these proportions further north). This absolutely beautiful "Rutgers' Firethorn" stays quite evergreen in our climate--always fascinating to watch as the very reliably produced annual berries gradually disappear as the resident birds start their winter feast.

Grayish black furrowed bark; dark green small rounded lobed leaves with a determined ability to remain attached on into winter. Excellent for small gardens needing a vertical accent from a slim tree offering no root competition to lower plants or near a house needing a visual accent while not shading too completely--not invasive of water pipes, nor prone to limb breakage in storms. This is the handsome exclamation point growing in front of our Carpenter Gothic house on the front street. After seeing this, you'll never be tempted by a "Lombardy Poplar" again.
