41796 SACCHARUM OFFICINARUM VIOLACEUM PELE'S SMOKE GRA TGH PRICE: $ 25.00 "Purple Sugar Cane" from Polynesia makes a dramatic pot plant with long elegant purple leaves ranked on the woody segmented maroon canes--long a premire favorite for collectors with a greenhouse desiring the visual design effect of this stunning "Black Magic Repellent Plant." This is best known as Saccharum 'Pele's Smoke' in Hawaii where thick stemmed clumps become stunning permanent garden statements. More recently this most handsome clump of dusky purple has won over temperate zone gardners bent on bringing a tropical tone to summer plantins. And indeed, the "Purple leaved Sugar Cane" becomes amazing when brought out into a collection of potted plants on your deck or patio. Various customers plant their ever-thickening clumps directly in their summer display beds, digging these shallow rooted clustered canes in the fall to store in their plant rooms or a corner of the hobbygreenhouse until spring re-planting. Always remember to keep the edible ornamental quite moist.

54066 SACCHARUM OFFICINARUM VARIEGATUM IVORY STRIPES GRA TGH PRICE: $ 35.00 "Variegated Sugar Cane" from Polynesia makes a dramatic pot plant with long elegant green leaves ranked on the woody segmented maroon variegated canes--another usual form and much sought after favorite for collectors with a greenhouse. 50065 SANCHEZIA SPECIOSA [NOBILIS CULTIVAR?] ACAN TGH HPPRICE: $ 6.00 Handsome glossy leaves with striking wide lemon veins outlined in mustard always making a major visual statement. Later these strong stalks terminate with nodding spikes of showy red bract from which emerge tubular yellow blossoms like a shrimp plant on steroids! This striking Ecuadoran species form from the former collection of Clyde Reed is very dramatic as a large accent in outdoor summer plantings as well as in the sweepstakes for the winter conservatory flowering razzle dazzle awards. Imperative in any good conservatory collection of the Acanthus tribe; the dramatically contrasty patterned foliage this "Golden Zebra Plant" is more dramatic than plants technically variegated. Please note that the cultivar below (considerably smaller in stature) is more robust and better tempered for houseplant culture.

50111 SANCHEZIA NOBILIS GLAUCOPHYLLA NANA ACAN HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.75 Wonderful dwarf form (compartively speaking) of this popular gold-patterned much branching showstopping plant. Red reduced bracts with yellow fls in terminal spikes. The better choice of the Sanchezia for outside container performance as well as houseplant adaptability; the following "Golden Zebra" is far more dramatic in sheer scale as well as more dramatic in the winter greenhouse blossom sweepstakes.

58453 SANCHEZIA NOBILIS SINGAPORE GOLD ACAN TGH PRICE: $ 25.00 This is a stunning cultivar of an already dramatic species. Wide creamy lemon leaves display a central patchwork of pale mossy green and platinum green, all framed with maroon rims and rose plushed petioles. Quite special although rather sensitive to chill.

50067 SCIAPHYLLUM AMOENUM ACAN TGH HP PRICE: $ 6.00 "Velvet Cloak Plant" Beautiful velvety rippled leaves, purple beneath, perched on elegant (eventually quite tall) woody stems; with time, expect modest purple flowers on the wand-like terminal spikes. Very showy although quite leggy if left on its own; so prune for the shape you desire or allow this exotic Acanthus to achieve the proportions of the standard (staking would be helpful) for which it is genetically programed. Nonetheless, for the consistent pruners among you, this can easily be kept in perfect proportions for the Wardian case (as does need reliable humidity levels to avoid damage to the exotic foliage) where it adds a major velveteen class act.

The Scindapsis species are among our favorite Devil's Ivies. They grow well as a house plant and thrive in warm locations.

30542 SCINDAPSIS EXOTICA [SPECIES] ARAC TGH HP PRICE: $ 22.00 A more robust clone than our original slow growing clone. Leathery wide lance leaves of glossy grey green, nearly obscured with bright aluminum grey. Best grown on a moss pole with the lovely visual result of shingled silvery pewter toned foliage in a glowing column. Very sensitive to chill; thus, we can only ship during warm months. CHECK OUT ALL THE WONDERFUL CLUBMOSS TYPES BELOW

11468 SELAGINELLA BRAZIL [SPECIES] SEL HP CGH PRICE: $18.00 "Brazillian Clubmoss" Arched wiry caulescent 10" stems branch (in time) to many weeping sprays of delicate-appearing scale-like leaves. Slow to establish, but most distinctively elegantly tall. Gives height in a sophisticated wardian case design. This tall species is quite slow to establish, but eventually quite impressive; for another tall species of much faster growth, see S. plana. Best to INQUIRE as to abailability before ordering this difficult species.

11416 SELAGINELLA FAIRY PLUME [SPECIES] SEL HP CGH PRICE: $ 3.50 Unidentified species from Southeast Asia with slim erect stems arching at top under weight of chartreuse plumes--possibly a compact form of S. victoriae. Must have rest period mid-winter; may reach one foot in height if given enough time. This is in the S. victoriae complex.

11703 SELAGINELLA FLABELLATA SEL TGH CGH PRICE: $ 6.50 A "Clubmoss" similar in its upright stature to martensii, but perhaps more compact with a bit coarser substance and a lovely dull gloss surface on each elaborately fingered wave of foliage which narrows when spore is produced. Quite interesting.

11412 SELAGINELLA KRAUSSIANA AUREA SEL TGH TERR PRICE: $ 4.00 "Golden Clubmoss" Short arching stems form bright mat; essential in any terrarium to brighten the design. While sometimes hard to distinguish from 'Gold Tips' in the summer, with winter temperatures and light intensities this tends to send out long 'fingers' of growth for a period mid-winter.

11453 SELAGINELLA KRAUSSIANA BROWNII SEL TERR HP PRICE: $ 7.25 "Emerald Isle" or (although native to S. Africa) "Scotch Moss." Once again available for the new season. Very compact, much branched stems eventually creating tiny cushions--excellent for extremely small terariums. Merely fabulous--but site it so it will not be swamped by or swallowed up by a more vigorous neighbor. Please, please, please do not expect a large plant when you order this--it starts out tiny and it stays tiny; if you need a larger plant, please order one of its kin. A propagate-to-order item.

11624 SELAGINELLA KRAUSIANA GOLD TIPS SEL CGH TERR PRICE: $ 4.00 Fabulous ferny carpet with all new growth tipped bright yellow against the darker mature clubmoss foliage--the fans of growth are wider and slightly more erect initially than those of the very similar 'aurea.'

11413 SELAGINELLA MARTENSII ALBOLINEATA SEL HP TERR PRICE: $6.75 "Snowy Club Moss" Arched, yet creeping, prostrate brittle, much-divided stems winged with scale-like glossy leaves with irregular patches of pure bright white--astoundingly beautiful--but be warned that this will remain entirely green if grown in constantly warm conditions. Mexican species for the larger terrarium. Rare cultivar yet not difficult to grow if given reliable levels of humidity.

11656 SELAGINELLA MARTENSII FROSTY SEL HP TERR PRICE: $ 8.00 "Frosted Club Moss" Arched, yet creeping, prostrate brittle, much-divided stems winged with scale-like glossy leaves with new growth and tipe growth frosted cream to white during the cooler cycle of the year; if kept constantly warm, will remain constantly green. Mexican species for the larger terrarium. Not difficult given good humidity.

11625 SELAGINELLA MOELLENDORFII SEL CGH TERR PRICE: $ 5.50 Beautiful soft tan toned "Club Moss" valued for terrarium and bonsai bases; tolerates chill; slow to establish, especially if not given cool temperatures during its winter rest when growth stops.

11427 SELAGINELLA PALLESCENS [EMMELIANA] SEL TERR PRICE: $ 6.50 "Sweat Plant" Fine terrarium plant growing in circular rosette arching vase forms with very fine foliage noted for holding droplets of condensation, thus "sweating"-- Venezuela, Z10. Very similar habit to moellendorfii, but much slower growing, not seasonal in growth spurts, and a touch more basil green in coloration.

11472 SELAGINELLA PLANA SEL TERR TGH PRICE: $ 5.25 Strong erect stems hold bright branched fans of shimmery foliage. Very distinctive beautiful "Spikemoss Cypress" species achieving more dramatic height than most of the tropical "Clubmosses." Certainly not "creepy." Unmatched for giving an exceptionally elegant vertical effect in a wardian case or larger terrarium; but remember that this is very tropical and thus, unlike various other Selaginella species offered here, is not tolerant of chill.

11414 SELAGINELLA POSADA #15 [SPECIES] SEL HP TERR PRICE: $ 10.00 Curly-fingered "fronds" intermingle into sea-green tostled carpets; uniquely colored unidentified Central American coming to us from the collection at Kew Gardens. This tends to be overordered, so best to check on availability before ordering. Considered the most beautiful by many fern collectors.

11478 SELAGINELLA UMBROSA SEL HP TERR PRICE: $ 15.00 "Red Clubmoss" Dark reddish stems give bronze mahagony tone to the abbreviated deep green leaves; tossled waves of short foliage make this Mexican a collector's choice. Small statured plants somewhat slow to establish compared to some species. Avoid extreme heat and deep shade.

11485 SELAGINELLA UNCINATA SEL TERR CGH $ 8.00 "Peacock Moss" "Rainbow Fern" Climbing and rambling stems, much branched, with blue tinted dimorphic scale "leaves" in four ranks. Sometimes looks like an oil slick. Becomes rather brownish during its dormant winter cycle, but fear not--just keep cool, moist, and very bright and behold, new blue foliage emerges come spring. This seasonal cycle and elongated rambling stolons render this more a headache than a beauty as a terrarium subject; but can be a fabulous carpet under the benches of your hobby greenhouse.

41469 SENECIO CONFUSUS [PSEUDOGYNOXIS CHENOPODIDIO] COMP CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.50 "Mexican Flame Vine" Modest shrubby vine with fleshy toothed leaves turning purplish in the winter to accent the many showy arching clusters of extremely showy orange rayed daisy flowers. Victorian favorite. Some customers claim to bloom this in outdoor summer containers; but blooms most reliably for us in midwinter when such brazenly colored daisies are desperately needed.

41471 SENECIO MIKANIOIDES [DELAIREA ODORATA] COMP HP CGH PRICE: $ 3.25 "German Ivy" or "Parlor Ivy" Glossy angled bright green leaves on succulent stems. South African species remaining quite popular as it tolerates a range of conditions. As likely to tumble from a windowbox in today's designs (especially as grows at least three times as fast as true Hedera ivies), as from the ornate urns in Nineteenth Century gardens--but always among the most popular of houseplants. Some plants are never out of fashion (even though their latin names morph into tonguetwisters).

60888 SENECIO PLEISTOCEPHALUS COMP CGH HP PRICE: $5.50 Scandent African shrublet, the "Golden Garland Vine" with broad semi-succulent oval leaves, attractively serrated; tiny bright yellow flowers in astoundingly large masses mid winter in the greenhouse. Fanciers of succulents are drawn to this for its gradually expanding woody base (caudex): by the way, many succulent leaved, and fat stemmed, and caudiform species of Senecio are offered in the SUCCULENTS section of this website. Click Here to go directly to the succulent Senecio listings and take a gander at some very fat dasies.

41472 SENECIO SCANDENS VIVIAN PERRY COMP HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Another "German Ivy" cousin; but actually a ray-flowered Asian species with angled holly like leaves somewhat elongately triangular. This attractive "Charlatan Ivy" produces showy heads of sulphur-yellow daisy flowers typically around Christmas; effectively displayed in a hanging baskets year round. Much showier blossoms than those of mikanioides.

40917 SERISSA FOETIDA FLORAPLENA RUB HP CGH PRICE: $5.75 Miniature-statured woody shrub with interlacing twigs bear tiny glossy green leaves in pert pairs and cute double white flowers tucked along the stems. The "Double flowered Snow Rose" much valued as the bonsai "Kochok" because with time it gradually takes on the character of aged trees. Quite a treat when in bloom.

40919 SERISSA FOETIDA VARIEGATA RUB HP CGH PRICE: $ 7.75 Available by Propagate-to-Order. Tiny lvs margined in cream-white, typically with a tiny white central flame as well; called "Tree of a Thousand Stars" for the many small white flowers along the stems late winter. Used in many styles of bonsai as "Iro-iro-kochoki."

41801 SERISSA FOETIDA YATSUBUSA-KYOTA RUB HP CGH PRICE: $ 12.50 Very dwarf fastigate twiggy habit with tiny leaves; unique tiny long-tubed white semi-erect flowers with narrow pointed tips. Choice "Kyoto Snow Rose" used in mame bonsai as "Kyoto Kochoki"--this is the difficult one as needs higher humidity than its kith & kin; nonetheless, certainly the most impressive as a bonsai. Please note that these will be extremely small plants when they arrive at your home because this is a miniature form.

58429 SETCREASEA [TRADESCANTIA] PALLIDA [SPECIES] COMM HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.00 " Blue Purple Heart" Trailing succulent stems clasped by dark purple strap leaves with cobwebby hairs; pale violet spiderwort flowers. This appears to be the old "Grape Ape" with more blue/lilac tones in the foliage than the common "Purple Heart" below--this glaucous bluish tone is hard to locate on easily grown urn plants, making this a valuable popular item.

50527 SETCREASEA [TRADESCANTIA] PALLIDA [PURPUREA] COMM HP CGH PRICE: $ 3.00 "Purple Heart" Trailing succulent stems clasped by dark purple strap leaves with cobwebby hairs; violet spiderwort flowers. This is the basic. Dead common, yet great eyecandy.

49431 SETCREASEA [TRADESCANTIA] PALLIDA BILTMORE BIMBO COMM HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 . "Giant Purple Heart" A very broad leaved form of the traditional standby, considered somewhat hardy in the South. This new fabulous form is a great dramatic basket plant as well as a showy summertime bedding plant.

50573 SETCREASEA [TRADESCANTIA] PALLIDA PURPLE FUZZY COMM HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.25 Recently arrived "Purple Fuzzy Heart" a tad similar to the familiar S. purpurea, but much more abbreviated, thicker leaves a lovely hazy purple green (violet purple beneath) nicely pelted; makes a compact cascading clump. Please help us find a more attractive clone name!

50528 SETCREASEA [TRADESCANTIA] PALLIDA TAMPICANA COMM HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Heavy curved (nearly keeled) laquered leaves of rich bronzy blushed purple on short stoloniferous stems; pale violet flowers in toppling clusters. Most unusual succulent vine of unclear nomenclature, considered a native of Ecuador. Must have high light to get the best color and most compact habit--best in full sun.

20493 SINNINGIA ANOB GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 7.75 Grass green foliage with purple highlights; spelling the name in reverse reveals the hybridizer of this "Mini-glox" with swooping bellflowers revealing white throats banded by lurid magenta demarking the cabbage rose scalloped flares; with age the ever thickening surface tuber supports stalks of considerable dimensions. This bad boy is usually available.

20219 SINNINGIA BARBATA GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 "Dutchman's Pipe" Erect stems hold stiff leaves with reddish reverse and odd yellow swollen tubular blossoms fading to parchment white. Brazilian species best grown in lite garden or Wardian case culture--never allow to go totally dormant as with the typical tuberous species, or will enter that dread territory known as terminal dormancy. Best Sinningia choice for hobby growers who are not itrigued with the challenges of dormancy cycles.

20502 SINNINGIA BILL HULL [HYB] GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 Marvelous reliable Ted Bona hybrid of Sinningia eumorpha with nodding slipper-shaped impressive white flowers (with a yellow blotch appearing in the tubular throat held elegantly above the oval foliage on short stems emerging from the basal bulb (which should not be burried). Easy to grow and to bloom.

20469 SINNINGIA BRAZEN [HYB] GES HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.50 Our name for an extremely vigorous Ted Bona hybrid of S. reitzii; the erect purplish woody stems produce a multitude of small rosy tubed flowers with flounced overlapping tips of magenta with deep wine-red netting. Very long lived as keeps pilling up new tubers above old ones, making this irresistable to caudex collectors.

20501 SINNINGIA CLAIRE ROBERTS [HYB] GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Beautiful compact Bona creation with wide lavender slipper flowers; attractive dark foliage with deep veins echoes its S. regina bloodlines. A wonderful plant commemorating a lovely lady.

20359 SINNINGIA SELLOVII GES HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 From soft basal foliage mature stems (eventually as tall as three feet) bear many pendant swollen dark salmon pink fls attractive to every passing hummingbird; seed collector Tim Ross recommends full light to encourage spring to fall bloom for this Brazillian native. Various plant friends store the (eventually) considerably sized tuber during the winter with other tropical bulbs, then plant out directly into their garden beds (sunny spots are best, with rich well drained soil--anywhere glads and dahlias thrive) for an astounding summer display--few visitors to their gardens can even begin to guess what the succulent leaved Gesneriad with an attentant vigilant hummingbird might possibly be (they'll never guess Gesneriad, alone Sinningia)! Since I characteristically neglect to dig most tropical bulbs & tubers, I keep my oldest tubers (some now 15 years old) in giant 15" baskets where they are essentially evergreen.

20260 SINNINGIA TANTE [HYB] GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.00 Long arching, then cascading stems with small soft leaves and eventually terminating in wands of many petite magenta tubular blossoms--a unique Ted Bona hybrid for large hanging basket. While the leaf & stems' character is petite; however, the eventual outline of many stems is substantial.

20230 SINNINGIA TUBIFLORA GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Tall stems (studded with pairs of small scalloped leaves) terminate with fragrant white tubed blossoms with flared lobes. Unusual chill tolerant type grown as an outdoor plant in southern California (but tubers must be considerably below frost line in perfectly drained soil). Rather too leggy to be an attractive houseplant--and the dormancy cycles can be perplexing--so just plant in a pot with a Bromeliad, Orchid, or even Oxalis as it is always happiest growing in another plant's pot, especially as tends to be quite stoloniferous with new shoots appearing unexpectedly in other areas of a wide pot. This characteristic has led several horticulturalists to suspect this to actually be the Brazilian Sinningia tuberosa.

57486 SOLANDRA BRACHYCALYX [HORT] SOL TGH PRICE: $ 12.00 "Costa Rican Chalice Vine" Smaller statured than nitida --Long whitish yellow trumpets ripen to rich buttery yellow with reddish violet stripes in bright light, usually peaking midwinter. Glossy vibrant foliage attractive all year. We thank Plant It Herbs for this distinctive "Chalice Vine" (actually a scrambling shrub) which is not the similar S. grandiflora according to several plant curators.

40922 SOLANDRA MAXIMA [NITIDA] SOL TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 "Golden Chalice Vine" Enormous nine inch long yellow cupped trumpet flowers with five purple lines; on stout stems--a Mexican native essential for conservatory or porch garden. Various plant friends lug a tub of this substantial shrub (vining only when so encouraged) into their winter plantrooms for an amazing stunning early winter floral display especially as it gives off a lovely coconut/vanilla scent..
